AN·O·MIE (ˈanəˌmē/) is a condition of society that isolates the individual through the dissolution of community.
As the digital expanse grows wider and wider, the social fabric that binds communities is in tension. Polarizing debate and the incongruence of realities cuts sharp dividing lines between people. While this landscape is filled with heat and uncertainty there is one thing that stands true—if you are alone in this desert, you will certainly perish.
Lunar Gala 2019: ANOMIE embraces an uncertain future on the horizon and the resilience of communities who are defining it.
There is no meaningful way to live life without one another. Communities provide the stability and purpose necessary for navigating a seemingly expansive and apathetic world. Fashion in particular can be a symbol or indicator of belonging to a community- this is why it’s often so culturally charged. You become more real when you are a part of a collective because your existence is extended above and outside of yourself—because you trek alongside others physically symbolically, aesthetically.
This year’s show is an ephemeral catwalk through the heat, expanse, delirium and utopia of a digital horizon. More than 120 individuals from across fashion, art, music, technology and science are brought together in our own time to celebrate difference, creativity and possibility. With our show, we hope to balance declaration with inquiry, introspection with discourse—recognizing this duality is crucial in preserving the structures of inclusivity and creative expression we often take for granted.
In our 22nd year of Lunar Gala we ask our participants: How does LG and Carnegie Mellon as a whole continue to foster innovation and experimentation within groups and across groups? How can the arts and spaces for the arts aid us on our journey towards new horizons?
